Case Study - The Science Behind Algonquin's Animals

The Sbaa.ca website was designed to integrate with Ontario High School curriculum. Teacher resources were compiled to aid teachers in planning lessons and activities and direct students back to the sbaa.ca website for background information, learning resources and interactive content. The site contains dedicated sections to species under study by researchers. For each species, its physical characteristics, migration patterns, food sources, and sounds are documented.
In addition, its predators and habitats are described. Interestingly as well, research questions that are currently being studied and are relevant to the species are discussed. The content on the website was written to inform high school students on research activities in the park, and to provide insight into how research in the park was being conducted. Hyperweb worked closely with the Parks Group Education Program Coordinator and staff to develop engaging content, and rich media experiences. In many instances we worked with archival footage in multiple formats to compile supporting video content.
Another important component of the sbaa.ca website was the development of three specific learning activity games. These games were leveraged to help explain key complex concepts on research activity in the park. Hyperweb worked closely with Algonquin park researchers to identify the games functionality, establish learning outcomes, and determine suitable activities. We then storyboarded the games, illustrated the screens, and developed the animations and programming for each game. The end result is three highly functional, visually rich interactive learning games that help communicate complex ideas to students.
In its graphic interface, it provides rich information resources to the public about the park, its geography, history, facilities, researchers and research projects. It is a truly multimedia web presentation including text, graphics, photos, audio, video clips, 360‐degree panoramas, interactive learning games, formatted documents, maps, and downloadable teacher’s resources.

Behind the scenes, the website includes a custom Content Management System (CMS) and allows Park Staff to easily update research information, teacher resources and many other aspects of the website.
The CMS system includes extensive capabilities for the client to upload rich media (video, audio) and other assets, effectively crosslink data (related books, glossary terms), manage users, update content, add pages and post new curriculum as it is developed.
